Whiskey Wednesday: Riverside

This cocktail reminds me of home because this is where I am from--Riverside California. It is also an excellent cocktail with fantastic balance between yummy approachability and intriguing complexity. I don't remember where I saw this originally, but it has been with me a while.





Riverside

2 oz  Cyrus Noble Bourbon

1 oz Dolin Dry Vermouth
1 oz  St George Raspberry liqueur
1/2 oz Fresh lemon juice

Shake with ice & strain
Add lemon twist

Mezcal Monday: The Mez-Mat

It is Mezcal Monday and last week I got some new bitters that I wanted to play with so I am going to make a simple drink with Don Amado Rustico. This is the drink I wanted. I have made it many times, but never really had a name. There are many versions of this that exist with many variation on the name. 

Basically this follows a Manhattan recipe swapping the American Whiskey with Mezcal. It is tasty and simple and this is what I wanted. After spending 2 hours trying to find a 'named' version that I could get behind, I gave up. I made the drink and call it a "Mez-Mat"; I think the name is funny, but if you think of a name that suits it better, let me know. I am open to suggestions. Also I am using 
my Fee Bothers Gin Barrel-Aged Orange Bitters again and they are great (but I love Regans too . . .)! I give you:



Mez-Mat

2 Oz Don Amado Reposado.
1 Oz Carpano Antica


Stir and strain into a chilled glass.
2-4 Dashes 
Fee Brothers Gin Barrel-Aged Orange Bitters

Whiskey Wednesday: Nor-Cal

This started out as a toddy that was super straight forward and very tasty. That I called the "Nor-Cal Toddy", this is an adjustment of the ratios and I call it the "Nor-Cal Cocktail" (click for origin & name details). Here is the recipe:



Nor-Cal Cocktail

2 Oz Cyrus Noble Bourbon
3/4 Oz Torani Amer
1/2 Oz Simple syrup (optional)

Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with an orange zest

I was glad to try this out as a cocktail; it is good.

Tequila Tuesday: Anon

This drink turned out fantastic, but was having a hard time naming it.

There was no rhyme or reason to this drinks creation and no real reason for the name... But it still is tasty.


Anon


2 Oz Purasangre Blanco
1 Oz Ruby Port

½ Oz Yellow Chartreuse

Stir and strain into a cocktail glass.

Mezcal Monday: The Bronze

Well it is Mezcal Monday and last week I got some new bitters that I wanted to play with so I am going to make a simple drink with Don Amado Reposado.

My favorite drink to make with 
Don Amado Reposado is a Mezcal Old Fashioned, but as you know I have talked quite a bit about that drink. So I started thinking about  a variation on a Pink Gin (Gin chilled with quite a few dashes of Angostura Bitters added) and decided to try a version with mezcal adding my Fee Brothers Gin Barrel-Aged Orange Bitters and thought . . . AWESOME! So sticking with the name by color theme, I give you:



The Bronze

2 Oz Don Amado Reposado.
Stir and strain into a chilled glass.

4-6 Dashes 
Fee Brothers Gin Barrel-Aged Orange Bitters

So good . . .

Whiskey Wednesday: Jubilee Ideal

Well as inevitable as my celebration of recipes from the 'Cafe Royal' cocktail book, by W.J. Tarling spilling over into "Whiskey Wednesday" was, I might as well show another fantastic Bourbon Cocktail invented by Harry "The Dean" Johnson--easily one of the brightest stars in bartender history. Before I get to the recipe I will include another excellent quote from "Cafe Royal" about 'the kind of place that it was and the kind of people that would spend their time there:

"Was there a prank to play ? The Cafe Royal would be the stage. If Aubrey Beardsley would parade his pet skeleton, who played duets with him at the piano, it must be there; did a young actress just back from Spain want to try a new dance she could essay its steps on the table top at the Cafe. The greatest talkers were habitues, and with them bores were silent or found wit for the nonce. When Wilde, Whistler, Frank Harris and G. B. Shaw crossed verbal swords, when Yeats, Augustus John, Orpen and their crowd sat round the Cafe tables the new century's art shaped itself in the imaginations of the younger men."

Jubilee Ideal
Invented by Harry Craddock

1 Oz French Vermouth
1 Oz Italian Vermouth

Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass squeeze of lemon zest on top (drop in if you wish).


This is an outstanding cocktail as it is, but I prefer it with a couple dashes of bitters and perhaps a bit more bourbon (Ratio 2 Oz, 3/4 Oz, 3/4 Oz).

Tequila Tuesday: Sombrero

We are back with another recipes from the 'Cafe Royal' cocktail book, by W.J. Tarling, but first another terrific quote from the preface describing the neighborhood of his bar:

"It has been a 
pageant of contemporary affairs that has never ceased to go on, the multi-coloured, inimitable essence of the time which found its stage on the sophisticated ground of Regent Street. For it was to the Circus and Quadrant that people returned from the ends of the world, seeking there renewed glimpses of the most vivid of life as it was being lived."

This 'Tequila Tuesday' the beverage we will make is an amazing evening cocktail of classic form
, with a fantastic name. The recipe looks like this:

Sombrero

2 Oz ArteNOM 1580 Blanco
3/4 Oz Italian Vermouth (sweet)
3/4 Oz French Vermouth (dry)

Tarling says to shake, but I say stir with ice till very cold, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Express a lemon peel on top for oils.
Use as garnish or discard

I adjusted the amount of tequila up from the original recipe. It tastes better when the tequila proportions are raised. I mentioned this before, but this make sense when you take into account that the tequila Tarling was using was probably 'at least' 90 proof.
